About the Institute

The Olomouc Institute of National Memory is located in a former shelter in Bezruč Park, which was built in the mid-1950s as the headquarters of the civil defense staff. The underground spaces extend into the city walls, and the shelter has two floors and is divided into 39 rooms. The gloomy and cold walls of the shelter are a suitable place for telling stories from the 20th century in the Olomouc region. This unusual space requires sensitive modifications, so we decided to interfere with its interior as little as possible.

An audiovisual exhibition in a former shelter from the mid-1950s in Bezručovy sady Park. During a tour of the former nuclear bunker, visitors will learn about the dramatic fates of five witnesses of war and communism from the Olomouc Region. In the central part, visitors can view a comprehensive selection of the most interesting items from the entire Memory of Nations collection. The exhibition is complemented by large-format projections of archival photographs enriched with original sound design.
